The present jack has actually been in use since the 1930's.
According to Kari K. Laurla: "Suomalainen päällikkyysmerkki, Collegium Heraldicum
Fennicum, Vantaa 1986", the jack was adopted at the same time as the
rank flags were changed, i.e. on the 18th August,
1938.

The Flaggenbuch (1939) [neu39] construction shows
the two squares as 51 within 88 ((37+102+37):(37+102+37))
- while Album des pavillions gives 58 within 100 that makes difference less the
1%. There may be a further difference in the artistic representation of the coat
of arms.
